First a bit on my night in Germany.
The whole point of CouchSurfing for me was to avoid the sterile tourist impressions of a region and get a better feel for the people. So what impression of Friberg did I get from crashing the night at Rainer’s place?
Click any of the pics in this post to be taken to my flickr where you can access larger versions or view them on a map (they’re all geotagged).
We kicked the evening off with a traditional German meal – Leberle and Brägele. Washed it down with some traditional German beer. Then we moved into a tradional German Irish Pub. There we listened to an Indian guy singing Eminem Karaoke… Traditional. ![]()
Slept from 2 am till 7 am and then got on the road headed for the Austrian Alps.
It’s the food, the smells and the sounds that evoke the strongest memories, so although this photo may not say much to you, it brings the memories flooding back for me:

Apfelstrudel and an espresso, ahh, happy place. I negotiated more of the windy roads and hunted down my CouchSurfing location for the evening. Then I did the typical anti-social photographer thing and took off at dinner time to go and catch sunset. I promise this one is worth the couple of clicks to get through to flickr and then view at the largest possible size:
With some patience, and tolerence for the cold, I was later rewarded with a twilight photo of the alpine towns below me:
And to close, what are Leberle and Brägele? Liver and fried potato…
