Data Storage

48 Days and Counting

This particular dilemma is around how I store and backup my photos while travelling.  When I went to Rarotonga for a couple of weeks I chewed up around 14 gb of space.  I had a laptop with me so had copies on there and burnt to DVD before reusing my compact flash cards.  This time however, I’m away longer and need to travel lighter.  I’ve outlined some of my musings in an earlier post, and I’m short of time today so I’ll just go with the bare bones.  Went to http://www.flashcards.co.nz and acquired a handful of 2gb SanDisk Ultra II cards to add to my current collection.

So I’m kinda angling toward a netbook (e.g. Dell Mini 12) and CF cards as by dual backups (i.e. don’t overwrite the CF cards and bring both hard drive and CF copies home).  However, I really ought to have an optical backup to diversify my portfolio (i.e. DVD), but the netbook format doesn’t do optical drives.  The next step up in <13 inch notebooks in the non-netbook format takes quite a leap up in price.  Also, currently I have 13ish gb of CF storage – I’m going to need to be less trigger happy to make that stretch the month (less HDR and panorama attempts would be a good place to start).  So that’s where I’m at on sorting my photo storage while travelling.  More updates to come…

So, not to stereotype Europe as a big street-crime bazaar, but have you been making specific plans on how you’ll avoid having camera, photos, backups, etc. stolen away by sinister Europeans? (apparently I’m cynical today)

    • Yes, but I’m not telling you, you sinister American… Is New Zealand really that much more friendly than the rest of the globe? Hmmm, guess it could be. I do manage to walk around the backstreets here and not be attacked for my camera gear. But yes, I am aware of the potential and am keeping this in mind when looking at what I use as a camera/day bag. I expect to be carrying my camera gear (and travel docs) on my person most of the time so a comfortable and discrete bag is going to be critical. Hopefully not being completely ignorant and naff about the whole issue will help me too. Anywho, keen to hear any suggestions…
