It was originally the reputation of Luxembourg as beautiful city that drew me to the country, but in the end I spent more time getting lost in the hiking trails of the Mullerthal region.

Click any of the pics in this post to be taken to my flickr where you can access larger versions or view them on a map (they’re all geotagged).

The Mullerthal region is dubbed Luxembourg’s “Little Switzerland”. No idea what that means since I didn’t get to Switzerland, but anywho. The place has lots of really impressive rock formations that are hard to do justice on film (ok, CMOS sensor strictly speaking, but it just doesn’t have the same ring to it). The following photos were taken in a section of the forest around the little town of Berdorf, here’s its town hall:

The forest is fairly open (compared to New Zealand bush) and littered with giant sandstone formations and tall straight trees.

There are some really tight squeezes between some of the rocks, but there’s always other routes around. This one was a tad too small for me to get through with my camera backpack…

I went up some long and windy stairs:

and then back down others:

But in those shots you really can’t appreciate the scale, so I got out from behind the camera to try for some perspective:

and this one was my limit as far as running and posing distance before my 10 second timer kicked off:

After spending a day in and around the forest I did pop into Luxembourg City itself:

A panoramic view is ok, but really it’s the vertical levels of Luxembourg that make it really interesting:

Next it was into Germany…

I’m keeping my posts lightweight so I can at least get ‘em online.

Here’s some of the Müllerthal Trail in Luxembourg. I think they claim 350 km of tracks in around around the area, I could lose myself for days in there, it’s truely awe inspiring. And impossible to do the scale justice in photos…

Look, I got in front of the camera (click for map)

Me in front of the camera again - for scale

And that’s a long way to run on a 10 second timer… Especially when it took several takes.

More Luxembourgy Trail Goodness

And here’s one of a small town in Luxembourg, featuring the little Peugeot 207 that’s getting me around:

Berdorf and the Peugeot

Just the one of Luxembourg City itself for now:

Luxembourg

And to finish a HUUUGE thanks to Jonny, Joelle, Samuel and Emily for taking such fantastic care of me while I was in Luxembourg.
