Vista (un)Reliability

by Jason on Mar.18, 2009, under Computerish Stuff

My laptop (Dell XPS M1730) is performing very poorly and crashing all the time under Vista…  I’ll use that as my excuse for the lack of recent posts.  A picture speaks 1000 words…

That squiggly line (the Reliability Index) should look a lot less like a mountain range and should be sitting a lot closer to 10 rather than 2.55.  It’s an assesment by Vista of how stable it is.  Or in this case, of how very unstable it is.  Thought it was my graphics drivers for a while since I was tinkering with them, but I’m back to factory default there and it’s still performing poorly.  Second suspect was the antivirus software (the system would randomly freeze for 2 – 5 minutes and then sometimes carry on like nothing had happened, so I suspected AV interference)…  But no, running different antivirus software now and still getting the same problem.  Vista seems to think the issue is with the hard drive, but I see no signs of failure.  I’ve grabbed a 15 day trial of Altrix Hard Drive Insepector for Notebooks to see if it picks up anything for me – but it’s currently reporting good hard drive health.  15 day trial…  15 days till I depart for Europe now too…  Wooo!
